Creating a Loan

This document explains how to create a new loan casefile in Desktop Underwriter® (DU®). The Loan List is the first screen you see when you log in to DU. You can use the Loan List to create or import a loan casefile or to view a list of existing loan casefiles.

  1. To create a new loan casefile, click Create Loan.

  2. Select an Institution from the drop-down list. If you only have access to one institution, that is the only one you will see listed.

  3. Select the Mortgage Type Applied For and Number of Borrowers from the corresponding drop-down lists.

Note: USDA Rural Development is not in scope, which means DU will return an Out of Scope recommendation if you select that option.

  1. After you complete the first three fields, additional fields to enter the borrower information appear.

  1. Enter the borrower name, SSN or ITIN (do not included dashes), and other applicable information for each borrower.

Note: If the borrower’s legal name does not consist of a separate first name or last name, the missing name field should include the signifier the borrower uses in other official documentation (if any). If no other signifier exists, since both a first and last name need to be provided from a technology perspective, at least one character should be entered in the missing name field (i.e., X, NA, etc.).

  1. Use the drop-down list to identify whether the number is an SSN or ITIN.

  2. Select the borrower Citizenship from the drop-down list.

Note: DU supports a maximum of four borrowers. If there are more than four borrowers, you need to manually underwrite the loan.

  1. Scroll down to the Current Address section for each borrower. If the co-borrower shares the same current address as the borrower, check Same as Borrower 1.

Note: Each borrower’s present address must be within the U.S., U.S. territories, or an APO, FPO, or DPO military address in order to obtain a credit report that is compatible with DU loan casefile requirements. A loan for a borrower with a foreign credit report must be manually underwritten.

  1. Click Create Loan on the bottom right corner of the screen.
